What to Expect in a Session…
At Full Function, every session is designed to build strength, agility, endurance, and skill – whether youβre training one-on-one or in a small group with your buddies. My approach blends martial arts, functional movement, and strength work to create a challenging yet adaptable workout for all fitness levels.
Each session follows a proven structure to help you move better, hit harder, and develop true functional strength.
1: The Warm-Up
We start with dynamic movement to wake up the body and sharpen the mind. Depending on your ability, this might include:
- π₯ Footwork / handwork drills (to improve agility and movement efficiency)
- π₯ Jump rope (for coordination and conditioning)
- π₯ Alternative low-impact warm-ups
2: The Main Training Block
This is where the real work happens. Sessions are tailored to your goals, abilities and preferences, and may include:
- π₯ Functional Strength Training β Loaded and unloaded movement patterns, crawls, climbs… All the good stuff to develop muscle and full body resilience.
- π₯ Padwork or Heavy Bag β High-intensity striking for cardio, body composition, endurance, and explosive power.
- π₯ Agility Drills β Practice moving with precision, control, and speed.
Every movement has a purpose – whether itβs making you stronger, faster, or more efficient in your bodyβs natural mechanics.
3. Form and Cooldown
We finish with focussed practice and recovery – bringing your heart rate down whilst reinforcing movement quality. We’ll work on your personal “Taolu” (form), which is a structured martial arts sequence choreographed to develop your skill, balance and mobility, based on your training goals. This might be a well-known form from a widely accessible ‘traditional’ martial art, or a bespoke sequence designed specifically for you:
- π Tai Chi sequences, such as the “The 24-posture Simplified Form” β Flow-based movement for balance, mobility, and control.
- β‘ Shadowboxing drills β Power-based striking combinations for strength and speed.
- π Shaolin Kung Fu patterns, such as “Wu Bu Quan” (5 stance form) – A hybrid of strength, fluidity, and martial arts technique.
- π§ Yoga & Mobility Work β Breathwork, poses and transitions to improve flexibility, recovery, and body awareness.
Your Taolu practice acts as a cooldown, helping you stretch, refine your technique, and lock in your progress… It’s also something you can practice anytime inbetween sessions at home, to keep ‘greasing the groove’, stay mobile and keep on learning!
Why Train This Way?
- β Full-body functional fitness β Every session builds real-world strength, agility, and endurance.
- β Martial arts skill-building β Not just exercise – youβre developing movement skills with purpose.
- β Adaptable for all levels β Whether youβre a martial artist or just starting, training is adjusted to fit you.
- β A dynamic, engaging alternative to the gym β If youβre bored of standard workouts, this is fitness with a fight-back attitude.

FAQs
This all sounds very eastern – do you do Chi Gong and meditation too?
I like to focus on physicality – the ‘Yang’ side of things – during these sessions, but if you are interested in engaging with a fully rational, wellbeing-focussed take on these practices, then I can help you get started with the ‘Yin’, too!
Can we work with martial arts weapons?
I’m currently reinforcing my own practice with the 54-form classical Yang style sword (Jian) form, and hope to expand this to others in the near future – this is great as a ‘loaded movement training’ practice, developing arm strength and motor finesse.
Do you do Karate / Taekwondo / Jiu Jitsu / … ?
I’ve always been most motivated by Chinese martial arts (collectively called “Wushu“) – that’s both “taolu” – fast and slow kata/forms and “sanda” – competition fighting akin to kickboxing… But there’s nothing I love more than working with other martial arts nerds on how their favourite movement patterns can be of fitness-improving benefit to anyone!
